A Desire to Help Virginia Henderson was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Daniel Brosius Henderson and Lucy Minor Abbot. Named for the State her mother longed for, she returned there at age four and began her schooling at Bellevue, a preparatory school owned by "Grandfather", William Richardson Abbot. Henderson provides the essence of what she believes is a definition of nursing. Her emphasis on basic human needs as the central focus of nursing practice has led to further theory development regarding the needs of the person and how nursing can assist in meeting those needs.
